Careerbum.com creating platform for Nebraska job searches
The unemployment rate in the U.S. is at its lowest since 2008. In April, Nebraska's Department of Labor reported that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 3.6 percent.
This is one of the best times to be seeking a job and CareerBum.com (CB) helps connect both job-seekers and employers with potential matches in central Nebraska. Company founder Travis Powell said he was hearing a lot of the same questions from companies and Chambers of Commerce organizations.
"We're losing students. They go back to the metro areas and don't come back. I kept hearing, 'How do we make people aware of career opportunities that are right here,'" Powell said.
Powell is a multi-faceted entrepreneur. He also owns Essential Personnel, a staffing and employment agency.
"We are faced with the same problems. How do we find that talent and get them to come back here?" he said. With the area's low unemployment rate, more jobs are being created. The problem is having the people to fill the positions.
"We don't want to lose those jobs. If we don't have the people, we will," Powell said.
After doing extensive research, Powell decided he wanted to create something more than a job-posting board. On CareerBum.com employers create profiles for their company, thereby creating, according to Powell, a branded experience.
"Selling your company is an important part to your profile," Powell said. "A job seeker is going to apply based on what they know about your company."
Companies can post photos, video and direct links to their websites on the profiles. Career Bum's clients range from very small to huge but the service they provide for job posters is the same. Once the registration process is complete, businesses call CB for support on setting up their profiles, if necessary.
"We have the conversation with our clients and teach them how the company profile is a great tool to have more success," Powell said. "Using the profile as a tool to your company's advantage will serve you and the job seekers."
With approximately 1,300 employees, Chief Industries is always looking to fill positions. They use CB to post their jobs. Chief Industries Training Coordinator Tracy Blome posts the company's listings. She said the process is user-friendly. Previously, Chief posted their jobs on a larger, national site. The company wanted to save costs and when they were approached by CareerBum, they decided their product was different kind of listing site.
"We always have a lot of openings at Chief," Blome said. "Since our main focus is in central Nebraska, CB was a good choice."
Chief has just started posting their openings from CareerBum to their social media outlets, but Blome said she likes that CB not only posts locally, but also nationally, through other listing sites.
Titan Machinery is based in Fargo, ND, but with 15 plants and dealers in Nebraska, they do a lot of hiring. Titan’s Recruiting Coordinator Teri Winkelman said they’ve been using CB since September of last year.
“We had such a need for local recruitment,” Winkelman said. “We decided to use CB because they focused on recruitment in rural areas.” She praised the setup process. "It was easy to set up and the customer service from our rep, Aimee Fritson, is absolutely incredible.”
The customer service at CB highlights one thing Powell said he hears all the time: “People in the Midwest have such a strong work ethic. They’re nice and they have better family lives.” His company is not only a reflection of that, but it accents what kind of employees are available for hire in rural Nebraska.
"One of our goals is to help companies make others aware of what opportunities are out here," Powell said. "It doesn't only happen in Omaha, Kansas City or Denver."
